17 Must-Have Products for First Time Parents
If you’re currently a first time expecting parent and you’re not sure what to add on your baby registry, don’t worry–we’ve got you covered. I used Babylist when I was setting up my baby registry, and I loved how easy it was to add anything and everything that I thought would be helpful to me and baby. That and anything that I thought was cute. 🙂 They made it so simple. I explain all about how Babylist works here and why I used it for my pregnancy.
I think we can all relate to getting carried away adding all the things to our baby registry that we want or think we need, but what are the true essentials? Well, depending on your budget this list can vary, but I’m sharing all of the items that I personally couldn’t live without as a parent. These are also the necessities that I highly recommend to all of my baby planning clients. Here are my 17 must-have products for first time parents.
Swaddling is everything when you have a newborn. It helps soothe baby since it emulates the feeling of being inside the womb and can calm them down. I particularly love these muslin swaddles because they are multi-functional! You can use one as a car seat cover, a nursing cover, a burp cloth, and more! They are soft, breathable, and large enough to create the perfect, snug swaddle for your little baby.
Something that you need to consider when having a baby is where your baby is going to sleep once they are born. Are you going to bed-share, get a co-sleeper, have baby immediately sleep in the crib? For me, I wanted to gradually move my son to his crib and the DockATot was the perfect solution. We first had the DockATot in the middle of our king size bed so that my husband and I could quickly meet his needs. Then, after a few weeks, we moved the DockATot inside a co-sleeper right beside my bed. At three months, we moved the DockATot inside his crib. My son has had such a smooth transition with each move because where he sleeps has always been consistent–his DockATot! Because of it, he’s been great with naps and bedtime even when we are traveling. I cannot recommend the DockATot enough!
I’m a firm believer in having a sound machine where baby sleeps so that you and your partner don’t have to act like you’re walking on eggshells every time you pass your sleeping baby’s room. The white noise sound mimics the sound that baby heard while inside the womb, which is very relaxing for baby. I love our Hatch Baby Rest because it’s a sound machine (it makes several different sounds like waves, the forest, white noise, etc.), a night light (which was perfect for late night feedings so I didn’t have to turn on a bright light, waking up baby), and an OK-to-Wake alarm. It really can grow with your child! You can set light color preferences, volume preference, and set what time you want something to happen all on their app. Very cool!
These burpy bibs are amazing since they can transition from a good burb cloth that hangs over your should to a bib when baby is ready to eat solids. It’s less for you to buy since it’s great for both stages.
Even if you are planning to exclusively breastfeed, having some bottles on hand is a good idea. You may want to go run some errands sometime without baby, or visit with some friends, or treat yourself to a mani or pedi. If baby gets hungry while you’re away, another caregiver can easily warm up some breast milk or prepare some formula in a bottle and feed your baby.
Which bottles should you choose? Every baby is different but one bottle that a lot of babies like are the Dr. Brown’s bottles. They have wide neck bottles that are great for all babies — babies that only bottle feed or babies that are transitioning from boob to bottle.
And if you’re hesitant to register for any specific bottle, check out the Babylist Bottle Box–an opportunity to try them all!
Whether you need to warm up a bottle or a bag of frozen breast milk or even a bag or bottle of baby food, the Kiinde bottle warmer can help and (in my opinion) is awesome! I love that it’s a flexible size that can grow with your family and that it solves a lot of parents’ needs. Major A+!
Those dirty diapers can really leave an awful smell. This is why I chose the Ubbi steel diaper pail for my son’s room. It contains that stinky smell and I really love that you can use any kind of trash liner with this diaper pail, so there’s no need to buy expensive custom liners. I also love that they have all sorts of colors and styles so you can pick one that best goes with your baby’s room. That mint color, though! (All the heart eyes!)
We used this Ubbi Diaper Caddy from day one and actually STILL use it today! Our house has multiple levels and I didn’t want to have to set up a whole other diaper changing station in my house. This diaper caddy carries everything you need: diapers, wipes, diaper changing mat, and a drawer for you to carry anything else you need, like diaper balm, nail clippers, a thermometer and more.
You do need a diaper changing station to regularly change your baby’s diapers. It’s a good idea to have a safe comfortable place to lay baby down, so that’s why we recommend a changing pad. I love the Keekaroo changing pad. Why? You don’t have to buy any changing pad liners. It’s made of a waterproof, nontoxic Dura-Soft material and all you have to do is wipe off any accidents. Voila! No need to buy or spend time washing any covers. We love ours and I highly recommend!
10. Puj Tub
When it’s bath time for your sweet baby, you need something to bathe baby in beside the sink or tub. Baby doesn’t have the neck, core or back muscles to hold himself up yet, so I recommend getting a tub like the Puj Tub. Granted, it can only be used in a small sink like a pedestal sink, but this is great for a lot of families since you can bathe baby in a bathroom sink. No need to bend down all the way in the tub and strain your back while bathing a wiggly newborn!
You need a few washcloths during baby’s bath and a drying towel when it’s time to get them out! These Little Unicorn Hooded Towel Sets are ultra-soft, absorbent and absolutely adorable. They even have pockets to dry those tiny hands! 🙂
This is not your average play gym. This baby play gym from Lovevery was thoughtfully designed by child development experts. It has 24 stage-based play activities, an organic ball and teether, a sustainable wood batting toy, 4 interchangeable learning card sets – black & white, body, objects, mirrors, and I love that it converts into a play fort with a play space cover for toddlers. It’s the ultimate play gym.
It’s common for baby to drop their pacifier and become fussy when they can’t find it. Baby hands are clumsy, so it’s much easier for them to hold onto a cuddly stuffed toy than a tiny pacifier. The WubbaNub pacifier fixes that problem. It’s a small stuffed animal attached to a pacifier. It’s loved by adults, too! Parents no longer have to search all over the crib, the floor, the bottom of a diaper bag or in the car for baby’s pacifier. It’s easy to see and find with the stuffed toy. Another perk, it’s super cute!
Babies love movement. They are so used to you moving during your pregnancy so being held and having you move around is their absolute favorite. But parents can’t hold baby all the time. This is why baby swings and bouncers are great. We love the 4moms mamaRoo because it is designed to simulate the motions parents do when comforting their newborn. There are several options for motions like a car ride, a tree swing, a gentle wave, or the bounce of a parent’s arms. It can also play sounds and when connected to an MP3 device, the motion, sound, speed and volume can be adjusted with a phone on their app or any Bluetooth-enabled smart device. Super cool!
I cannot tell you enough how much my husband and I loved the Owlet. It gave us such peace of mind every night we went to sleep. If you’re not sure what the Owlet is, it’s a smart sock baby monitor that tracks your baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels while they sleep—and notifies you if something is wrong. The alarm only went off once when our son was a few weeks old letting us know that his oxygen levels had drops, which I quickly rolled over and tended to my baby. I was so grateful for that monitor and felt safe knowing that it was staying up at night “watching” our precious baby so we didn’t have to and could get some sleep. It also comes with three sock sizes, so it can grow with your baby.
A snot sucker? What?! That’s right. This NoseFrida is a MUST for congested babies. Babies aren’t able to blow their own noses so you have to help them clear their breathing way. There used to only be nasal bulbs, but those are not very efficient or clean. They don’t have the suction that you need to get everything cleared out, and the NoseFrida does the trick! And don’t worry, parents. You aren’t getting any boogers in your mouth. Yuck! There is a sealed air-tight filter that keeps those boogers contained in the cartridge. Then just wash with soap and water or you can throw it in the dishwasher! Don’t forget to replace the filter!
17. Baby K’tan
And last but not least, a baby carrier! As parents we learn how to do pretty much everything with one hand, but with a baby carrier you can get so much more accomplished and baby is happy since they are right with you. Some carriers can be bulky, hot, and confusing to use, but this Baby K’Tan baby carrier is simple, lightweight, and easy to store. It’s been a favorite of ours that we think you’ll love too!
There you have it! The baby essentials that all first time parents need for their newborns. Hope this helps. Congratulations!
