Product Review: LUSH Cosmetics

I must have been living under a rock because I had never really heard of LUSH Cosmetics until recently. I probably did hear the name of it once or twice, but never really thought anything of it or had the urge to look into it until recently. One of my new doulas on my team, Mary Alice, (at my company Bassett Baby Planning) mentioned that she worked there part-time and was telling me all about their products. When I was telling her about my skincare needs, she told me that I should check it out. It’s obvious that I’ve arrived at the LUSH Cosmetics party a bit late, but I’m here, and I’m so glad I made it. 🙂

Like a lot of people, especially moms, my schedule is crazy and it’s difficult for me to find the time to have a skincare routine that takes too long. I need something that is going to be quick and easy. It’s also difficult for me to find products that I like, and products that I believe in that are also natural/eco-friendly. When I was talking to Mary Alice about LUSH’s products and what she recommended that I get for my skin, I decided to take her recommendation and give it a try.

When I first walked into the store, I was shocked by all the different products that they offer. They offer bath products, shower products, skin care, makeup, perfumes, things for men, women and children, you name it! It was a very cool store to explore.

I also learned a lot about the brand while I was there. Like how they’re completely cruelty free, and actually fight animal testing (love that!), how they use only fresh ingredients, and hand make each individual product. They participate in ethical buying, “green” washing, and more. For these reasons alone, I fell in love with the company. I just had to test the products myself.

As I walked in, I was greeted by their kind staff and then sat down with Mary Alice for a consultation/demo of their products that she thought would be good for my needs. I loved that they will sit with you, show you the products, explain what’s in them and how they will work, as well as demonstrate the products on your skin

The first thing that Mary Alice showed me was the Ocean Salt Cleanser.

Ocean Salt ($35.95)

Lush Ocean Salt Exfoliator

I have had a hard time finding the right type of exfoliant for my skin since I have very sensitive, dry skin. A lot of scrubs/exfoliators have left my skin feeling raw and irritated after using them. I was looking for something that was going to fully exfoliate my skin, but still hydrate it.

When Mary Alice showed me this product and demoed it on my hand, I loved how it smelled and even tasted (don’t judge me). It was like a mini margarita (there’s vodka in it not tequila, though)! I also liked how it made my skin feel afterward. This product is made of limes steeped in vodka, grapefruit and salt. The sea salt is rich in minerals and is excellent for scrubbing away dead skin. It also has avocado butter, coconut oil and seaweed absolute to keep my skin soft, smooth and conditioned. That is EXACTLY what I needed! Basically I need any of their products that contain seaweed since that helps soften and condition my skin. 😛

I was worried that the vodka inside it could be a little drying over time if I repeatedly used it on my face, but I only use it now once a week and it has been wonderful! I love it. It’s also great that you can use it as a full body scrub. Highly recommend this product!

She then showed me the Ultrabland Facial Cleanser.

Ultrabland ($16.95 – $29.95)

Lush Ultrabland

Mary Alice was asking me what I used for makeup removers and, honestly, I have been using the Neutrogena face wipes, which I’m not super crazy about because of all of the chemicals in them. When she showed me this product and tested it on my skin, I was hooked! The rosewater and flower extract helped leave my skin feeling soft and supple and it even got off my waterproof mascara! Basically anything that is goink to be gentle on my skin and get the job done, I’m all about it. Check!

After that, Mary Alice brought over the Breath of Fresh Air toner.

Breath of Fresh Air ($9.95 – $21.95)

toner water

After washing your face you need a good toner for your skin. I love how this fresh seawater gently cleanses my skin, while the carrageen extract (seaweed) softens and provides essential vitamins and minerals to my skin. And the rose absolute and aloe vera are great for soothing those dry areas. Yes please! I was shocked to see how much it was pulling out from my pores each time I used it.

The next product Mary Alice showed me was the Skin Drink Facial Moisturizer.

Skin Drink ($23.95)

Skin Drink by LUSH

This was the main reason why I came to LUSH. Dry skin is my main issue so I wanted to find a good moisturizer that I would love. And Skin Drink is definitely a great one that my skin not only wants to drink up, but gulp down!

Mary Alice at first recommended that I get the Skin’s Shangri La, but once I read the ingredients and saw that there was Lanolin in there, I was turned off. (Lanolin is a waxy substance that coats a sheep’s fur keeping it moist and protecting its skin. Lanolin can contain sweat, sebum, dirt, dust, pollen, fecal matter and pesticides, which are sprayed on the sheep directly to treat mites and pests. No thank you!) Also the price tag ($49.95) was a bit too steep for me. I’m super happy with the other options that she showed me and am very happy with my ultimate selection, Skin Drink. And it doesn’t hurt that it is also half the price as their Shangri La.

Skin Drink is packed full of nourishing ingredients like moisturizing rose petal extract, fresh avocado and calming aloe vera extract to keep my skin feeling soft and give me a nice glow. LOVE!

This next product is BY FAR my favorite product that she recommended that I toil home. And I didn’t even go in there looking for hair products!

BIG Shampoo ($26.95)

BIG Shampoo from LUSH

Big Shampoo LUSH

Mary Alice obviously couldn’t show me how it works in the store, but she said that if I wanted more volume that I would love this product. She was right! I love how it smells when I lather it in my hair and how it basically is exfoliating my scalp (bye, bye dry scalp) and makes my hair feel squeaky clean and full of volume. The bigger hair the better, so I’m hooked!

BIG Lush

The last thing that I looked at was the Rosie. If you didn’t know, my favorite color is pink and I love flowers, so Mary Alice thought I might like the Rosie gift box.

ROSIE ($36.95)

Rosie LUSH

Mary Alice brought up how I work so much and that I really need to pamper myself every once in a while. I feel like you ladies understand. It’s hard to squeeze in time to soak in a bubble bath and treat yourself to some “you time”. She is right though! We all need to make time for ourselves and after trying the Rosie box, it is the perfect trick to soaking your worries away!

Inside there’s:

  • Rose Jam Bubbleroon – I love how you can twist it apart and use it for TWO baths. It creates the rosiest-scented bubbles (amazing!), and the ingredients make for a majorly moisturizing, softening and luxurious soak.
  • An Amandopondo – a bubble bar that is scented with rose absolute and a citrus twist of lemon and orange oils to help you relieve your stress as you soak in a tub of beautiful fluffy bubbles.
  • A small jar of Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner – We condition our hair after we use shampoo so why don’t we condition our skin after we use body soap? This is what you need! My skin is the smoothest and softest it has ever been. I feel like my skin is singing it’s praises! Amazing stuff!
  • A small bottle of Rose Jam Shower Gel – This is a limited time only product. Bummer! Because I’m now hooked on how it leaves my skin soft, hydrated and sweetly-scented. Since I prefer showers over baths, I may have to go back for more before they are out.
  • A small tin of Ultrabalm – This balm is an all-purpose balm made with plant waxes and nothing else. They said that you can apply it to scrapes to relieve discomfort, to tame flyaway hair, or even as a lip balm. I did try it as a lip balm but found it to be too gritty. I did not like the consistency of it when rubbing my lips together. It felt as if I was exfoliating my lips. Not sure if I would use this product again… Sorry!

I also decided to get one more bath bomb since it smelled so good! (They were out of Sex Bomb, which I hear is the best.)

Blackberry Bath Bomb ($6.35)

Blackberry bath bomb LUSH

This apparently is one of the first bath bombs invented (1989)! It doesn’t surprise me that it’s still on the stands because I LOVE the smell. It’s burst of fruity fragrance and the uplifting bergamot oil and frankincense oil help dissolve all of your cares away. These things may just make me enjoy a relaxing bath more often!

it was a great shopping trip and I truly have enjoyed learning about the company and trying the products. One more thing that I will add, when testing products on their customers, the LUSH employees use A LOT of paper towels to wipe away and dry their customers’ skin. Being such a big advocate for green/eco-friendly living and products, why wouldn’t they consider investing in using washcloths for their clients instead? I feel like that would go along with their mission and help conserve the huge amount of paper that they currently consume. Just my thoughts!

I hope you enjoyed this review on some of LUSH Cosmetic’s products. I’ll absolutely be back for more! What are some LUSH products that you can’t live without?
