Fischer’s BIG Boy Room Reveal + Havenly Review

A few years ago, while expecting Fischer, one of my favorite items to check off on ‘The List’ was designing his nursery. The space where he would snuggle multiple times a day; where I’d rock him late into the night, and refuse to put him in his crib even long after he’d fallen asleep. The place where his imagination would run wild as we read stories about little blue engines, teddy bear picnics, and fish who wear hats. I dreamt about this room from the moment we found out he was a boy, and spent way too many hours at work filling my Pinterest board with ideas.

In no time at all it seemed that I had created the perfect room for our first little man. Well, almost perfect. I hadn’t actually created anything. Because although I had great ideas, I didn’t quite know how to make them a reality. As luck would have it, our good friend and interior designer/architect, Becca, had just moved back from over-seas and wanted to help us design Fischer’s room. I ecstatically accepted her guidance and we got to work turning my dream nursery into a reality! It quickly became my favorite room in the house and Fischer, daddy, and I created some wonderful memories there.

When we found out we were pregnant with baby number two, and decided not to find out the gender, the ONLY part I regretted was the nursery design. Though I thought I’d be happy with a gender neutral nursery at first, I realized I wanted the room to really reflect who we were bringing into the world — and that definitely depended on the gender. However, that disappointment was quickly remedied by the fact that instead of creating a new nursery space, I got to create a new TODDLER space! We decided to move Fischer to our guest room, and I just didn’t think the “French country chic” vibe was quite what a little boy wanted. Ha!

I began planning and pinning, thinking a lot about the type of room I wanted to create for him. I knew that I wanted a space that really reflected who he is; bright, cheerful, and inquisitive. But again, I wasn’t quite sure how to make it all a reality as one of my biggest challenges was sourcing items.

Luckily, I learned about a company called Havenly through advertisements on Facebook. Havenly is an ONLINE interior design company that charges a flat fee to either refresh a space ($79), or design a completely new space ($199). How cool is that?! I love working with local interior designers, but sometimes a room calls for a more budget-friendly process. And working with Havenly offers just that.

So how does it work exactly?

After filling out a short survey so that Havenly can understand your style personality, you are matched with the designer who best fits you. Your designer will then contact you to set up an initial consultation via either phone or email, and after reviewing uploaded photos, will get to work designing your dream space. My designer, Clare, actually FaceTimed with me so that she could get a better feel for the room she would help me design, as well as the style of the rest of our home. That’s pretty fantastic customer service, in my opinion.

Once everybody is on the same page, your designer will send you two inspiration boards — and that’s when the process really becomes fun. You can pick and choose what you want to see in the room going forward; add ideas, change ideas — and you’ll continue receiving digital renderings of the space until you are 100% happy with the final design. This is another reason I loved using Havenly: a local interior designer may not be able to provide you with graphic designs and images. Instead, you’ll have to rely on what you can envision in your head. Which could be drastically different than how it turns out!

Once you’ve finalized your room design, your designer will send you boards with the layouts for each wall in the room, source all of the items, and create a shopping list for you. I loved this because I was able to pick and choose which items I wanted immediately, and which items I thought I could wait to purchase. (You’re able to revisit your shopping list even after you’re finished working with your designer.) To make the process even easier, you order directly from Havenly instead of having to go to each individual vendor. (Because who really has time for that?) Also one of my biggest design pitfalls is that I never know how to organize a space to look the way I want it to, so having layouts to help me was super helpful!

An area where I believe Havenly really excels is their customer service. My experience working with Clare was absolutely fabulous. She was prompt in answering my questions and tweaking designs, she was super friendly, and she offered great direction and suggestions. The other Havenly associates I worked with were equally as helpful — whether I needed something ordered, item statuses checked on, or just general questions answered. (A big shout out to Susannah who was amazing at answering my millions of questions, and also — small world — is my sorority sister!)

Considering working with Havenly after reading about them? Here are a couple of things to consider that will help make your experience a positive one.

1. The designer can only work as quickly as YOU are responding. If you aren’t taking the time to respond to their questions, or review the inspiration boards, then they really cannot get their jobs done in a timely fashion. The process can take two weeks, or six months. It’s all up to you, and how quickly and thoroughly you answer them.

2. Havenly is NOT responsible for the shipping and status of items. Though you order through the Havenly website, the individual vendors will ship when they receive the order. If you wait too long to order something, you may find that it has been placed on a back order or is discontinued. This is another reason you want to order as quickly as possible! This exact scenario occurred with a few of our items, but I was notified by a Havenly associate and was given the option to wait, or they could source something else.

3. The designer won’t have as clear a vision of your room as a local designer would have. While I did not find this to be a problem, I could see how some people would rather the designer be present to take measurements and be able to walk through and set up the space as items arrive.

Over all, our experience was really great and I will absolutely consider working with Havenly again on another room. Fischer’s room turned out exactly as I had hoped, and Clare even got me to use wallpaper, a design idea I was scared to try! I was so excited to introduce him to his new Big Boy Room right before he became a big brother — and he absolutely loves playing in, and exploring his very own space. Also, the $79 refresh option is really enticing, as I always seem to get the itch to change up our living areas as the seasons change.
