A Mother + Daughter Date: Laura Hooper Calligraphy Workshop

One day, while perusing Instagram, I saw on my feed that one of my favorite calligraphers, Laura Hooper, was going to be in Houston teaching a workshop! I was so excited!! I could not miss this opportunity. When I looked at the calendar as to when she was going to be in Houston, I quickly realized that my mother was going to be in town that very same weekend to help me with wedding planning. I thought about it for a moment and thought, wouldn’t this be such a fun activity to do with my mother? Like a fun mother + daughter date. My mother is such a great artist so I thought she would really enjoy a class like this. I knew that we would have fun doing and learning something new and creative together.

Since my mother is not familiar with Laura Hooper and her work, I knew that she had no idea of what to expect with her workshop so I was looking forward to her seeing and experiencing it all. (I’ve only seen pictures on Instagram of her workshops and knew that they were beautiful.) So if you’re interested in signig up for one of Laura’s workshops and potentially going with some girl friends, going on a mother + daughter date, or even going by yourself (lots of girls there were solo), here’s what you can expect.

For our workshop, Laura Hooper partnered with some amazing companies in Houston {location: Sugar + Cloth, flowers: Blush and Vine, sweets: Dolce Designs}. As soon as we walked into the bright and happy office of Sugar + Cloth and saw all of the beautiful flowers at each person’s seat and all of the yummy sweets, we knew we were in for a treat!

I made sure that when I signed up for the course that they knew that my mother and I were going together so they could make sure that we sat next to one another. I recommend to do that if you decide to go with a couple of friends or make it a mother + daughter date. Once we found our assigned seats, we were ready to start!

First we got to meet the lovely owner of Sugar and Cloth, Ashley Rose. She introduced herself, her space, and welcomed us all. I also follow her on Instagram {@sugarandcloth}, which I highly recommend that you do too since her photos are gorgeous and her DIY stuff is awesome. So, it was cool to see her space and meet her in person!

Then, she introduced us to Alyssa and Laura, the team at Laura Hooper Calligraphy. We were so excited! (If you’re wondering, Alyssa and Laura are sisters!) With everything looking so beautiful, we knew that it was going to be good. We first learned about our materials that were provided, how to properly care for them, and the workbook that we were going to be using. Laura actually wrote her own workbook for her workshops so it is specifically designed for her students and her workshop. Very cool!

They have you start off practicing some strokes and then go on to some easy letters. Laura personally goes over each letter on the chalkboard so that you can see how to properly execute each one. This is very helpful. She and her sister are there to see how you are doing and if you have any questions. They are there to help!

Laura and Alyssa walk you through every step, which is so nice. I will say that the workshop does fly by. All of a sudden you realize that it’s about to be over and you don’t want it to end! I almost wish it was a little longer or a full weekend course so that you can really practice your new craft. Maybe something like that will be offered for someone that is a bit more experienced. Maybe an intermediate class to calligraphy?! One can wish. 😉

Now having taken the class, I will say that this is the perfect course for beginners. They provide all the materials that you will need with the fee that you pay for the workshop so all you have to do is show up and have fun! I have never even attempted calligraphy before this class, but it’s very user friendly.

Overall, I highly recommend taking this fun and beautiful class. You will learn a cool new trick that you can treat your guests and friends to. Addressing envelopes, making place cards, or whatever you’d like will never be the same since you will now be able to add that extra bit of pizzazz and style that is personally designed by you.

We also received a cute tote filled with some goodies that we could take our materials home to practice. These ladies thought about it all. The presentation, the atmosphere, and the overall experience. Two thumbs up!!

What an awesome mother daughter date! If you’re not able to attend a workshop or if Laura and Alyssa are not going to be in your area, they are now offering an online course on their website! Definitely check it out!

Have you taken Laura Hooper’s calligraphy workshop or any calligraphy workshop? Which class do you recommend?
